Corina Garcia: ”My work portrays human emotions and identity issues. I use my insecurities as the fuel for inspiration to dig deeply into myself. I put my flaws and vulnerability on display in order to show my audience who I am and the common insecurities humans have, especially women. These feelings are hidden and kept to myself until released into theartwork. This exposure creates a sense of calmness after the burden of keeping an emotion locked inside for so long. Explosions of pain are unraveled. I focus on my identity as a young female because it is a pivotal state of my life as I believe it is for others as well. The identity aspect of my work focuses on the female gender and the disempowerment role we play to society. My exposure of emotions shows both, a helplessness and bring out the empowerment of moving forward with knowledge and acceptance of flaws and vulnerability.”

History of The Green Box Arts Festival

The Green Box Arts Festival was founded in 2007, and is held in Green Mountain Falls each summer. The Festival’s goal is to provide artists and visitors an opportunity to nurture the creative process and explore new artistic directions in the picturesque small town setting. A selection of past participants includes Keigwin + Company and sculptors Ben Roth and Jason Hackenwerth. Additionally, artwork from sculptor Olafur Eliasson and contemporary sculptor and photographer Kenneth Snelson was showcased at the festival. The festival’s foundation was laid in 2006 by Keesee, whose family history with the Pikes Peak area dates back to the 1900s, from which time members of the family have been in continuous residence, and active supporters of the development of the community’s cultural environment. Keesee first sponsored a dance residency program by Keigwin + Company that year, under the leadership of company founder Larry Keigwin, and the company has returned to Green Mountain Falls every year since. As the residency program progressed from year to year, an interest in diversifying and expanding activities quickly grew in the community, culminating in the formation of the Green Box Arts Festival. Partnerships with the Pikes Peak Library District, Town of Green Mountain Falls and Church in the Wildwood make the full range of activities possible. “Cloud City” is part of Keesee’s robust personal art collection.

About The Green Box Arts Festival

The Green Box Arts Festival was launched in 2009 to provide artists and visitors with an opportunity to nurture the creative process and explore new artistic directions in the natural beauty of Green Mountain Falls, Colo. The foundation for the festival was laid in 2006 with the sponsorship by Christian Kirkpatrick Keesee of a dance residency program by New York’s Keigwin + Company, and grew as interest in diversifying and expanding activities increased each year, through partnerships with the Pikes Peak Library District, Town of Green Mountain Falls and Church in the Wildwood. Members of the Kirkpatrick family have been in continuous residence in Green Mountain Falls since 1900; during that time, the family has been active supporters of the community and the development of its cultural environment. More information is available online at greenboxarts.org.

About Tomás Saraceno and “Cloud City”

Tomás Saraceno is internationally regarded for his visionary projects that explore the possibility of a future airborne existence – a literal “cloud city.” Informed by the worlds of art, architecture, natural sciences and engineering, his floating sculptures and environmental installations draw on geometries and phenomena of the natural world to propose new ways of inhabiting our environment. From small-scale sculptures to life-size interactive environments, each of the artist’s projects invites viewers to conceptualize – and, at times, physically experience – innovative ways of living and interacting with one another and with our surroundings at large. Cloud City consists of sixteen interconnected aluminum modules that visitors are encouraged to enter and explore. Habitat-like, and inspired structurally by elements such as clouds, bubbles, foam and bacteria, this work is an example of Saraceno’s ongoing pursuit of an Air-Port-City, his vision of a floating metropolis composed of habitable, solar-powered platforms that migrate and recombine as freely as clouds themselves. As viewers move through the structure, surrounded by transparent and reflective surfaces, they not only experience new notions of space from within, but also a new expanse of space above and beyond the work itself.

Green Mountain Falls Access and Area Attractions

At an altitude of 7,800 ft., picturesque Green Mountain Falls is home to various festivals and events year-round. Surrounded by Pikes Peak National Forest on three sides, the town is located near popular area attractions including the famous Cave of the Winds, Cliff Dwellings Museum, Garden of the Gods, Pike’s Peak and the COG railroad. An extremely popular hiking destination, visitors also enjoy fishing, swimming, biking, tennis courts, and ice skating in winter, as well as the town’s unique restaurants, pubs and shops.

Green Mountain Falls is located just 30 minutes from the Colorado Springs Airport, while Denver International Airport, offering direct flights from most major markets, is located 100 miles away, or a little more than an hour’s drive. Green Mountain Falls is just minutes from the towns of Woodland Park, Chipita Park, Manitou Springs and Cascade.

The Hagnauer Gallery

“Black Testament,” will feature the most recent work of recent UCCS graduate Dáreece Walker. Using mixed media on found/recycled cardboard and wood, the exhibit deals with issues of the black human experience as it relates to contemporary America and its history. The artist uses found/recycled cardboard and wood as a subtle metaphor for products of industry, qualities of being cheap or disposable, and forgotten history.

The show will run through June 15th

Update: April Fools! As if it wasn’t obvious, this was indeed an April Fool’s Day goof. I hope you all had as much fun reading it as we did writing it.

After much deliberation we are ready to announce our new name. We have thought long and hard about this decision, and have decided that the Business and Commerce Center will be our new moniker. Not only does it match our BAC acronym (for the most part), but it matches our goals and vision as well. Throughout our long and storied history as an organization, business has always been first, both in name and in practice. With this in mind we have decided to buckle down and focus our mission with a laser-like precision.

So what does that mean for the BAC? Soon, instead of seeing artists in paint- covered smocks, you can expect to see business-type people in tailored suits wielding briefcases instead of paintbrushes with Bluetooth headsets in their ears pumping sales figures rather than music. Along the same lines, all of our studio space will slowly be converted to various types of office space. An example of this is the painting studio, its large open layout will make it ideal for a cubical farm. In addition to this, our non-profit incubation program will converted into a rental program for small for-profit ventures exclusively. We are eschewing any sort of assistance or incubation aspects as a way to let our clients thrive free of any of our influence. Perhaps the biggest change, however, will be within our gallery spaces. They will be maintained as exhibition spaces that are open and free to the public, and the exhibition cycle will be roughly the same with an opening every 6 weeks. The big difference is that art will no longer be what is exhibited. Instead, we will be featuring the finest in business related visual stimuli, everything from an incredibly well wrought and in depth contract (elegantly framed of course) to the finest examples of bar graphs, pie charts, and other data visualization tools. Our next opening will be on the evening of April 26th, where you can look forward to seeing Microsoft Excel: A Retrospective.

“As a person who minored in economics, I have a deep appreciation for spreadsheets”
-Patrick Bohnen

We realize this transition will be difficult, but we also have a few things going for us. The first of which is that we will be maintaining the BAC acronym and branding, and as any marketing consultant can tell you, brand identity is pretty much the most important thing. The second is that with all the new business people around we hope to be able to glean some of their savvy. It is in this spirit, that we also plan to synergize, synchronize, be proactive, shift our paradigms, and get some of those logistics and analytics up and running. Executive director, Natalie Johnson, is ecstatic, “I just knew that all of those years of secretly reading econ books were finally going to pay off.” You all have stuck with us through thick and thin, and we have faith that you will support us in this. So, here is to 25 more years of business!

Hey BAC members, this is just a friendly reminder that we will be changing the art in the Members Gallery (formerly the Atrium) on Tuesday, April 2. You can drop off new work and pick up the old from 2pm to 7pm. This display will be up through June 4. We will be hosting a potluck starting at 5pm on Tuesday as well. This will be followed by a critique led by our very own Ramona Lapsley. Bring your work, food or beverages to share, and your creative ideas and questions. The only requirement for showing in the Member’s Gallery is that you are a current member of the BAC. If you have any questions about obtaining membership or if you want to check whether or not your membership is current contact Ludel by phone at 685-1861 or by email at ludel@thebac.org
