WORKSHOP

COLLAGE TECHNIQUES AND CREATIVE EXPLORATION 

WITH JONATHAN TALBOT

April 28th and 29th, 9:30 am - 5:30 pm

Collage without liquid adhesives! Jonathan’s new technique eliminates liquid adhesives, drying time, and wrinkling from the collage-assembly process. Explore composition and the creation of a personal visual vocabulary as you enjoy new opportunities for spontaneity and expression. Other subjects covered include the “paperless” transfer of printed and photocopied images, tissue overlays, and the presentation and framing of finished works, including those with 3-D elements. "The only prerequisites for this workshop are initiative and imagination." ~ JT

Workshop fee: $275. Includes all materials, a free copy of "Collage: A New Approach," and refreshments. Space is limited and registrations will be honored in the order in which they are received. 

About the Artist, Jonathan Talbot
The works of artist Jonathan Talbot have been exhibited at The National Academy and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, have represented the U.S. overseas in exhibitions sponsored by the State Department and the Smithsonian Institution, and are included in museum collections in U.S. and Europe. Talbot's works include oils, watercolors, etchings, collages, and multi-dimensional collage-constructions. Among the public collections holding Talbot works are The Newark Museum, The Smith College Museum, The Everhart Museum, The Byer Museum, The Free Library of Philadelphia, The San Francisco Academy of Art, Fairleigh Dickinson University, The Provincetown Historical Society, and the Toronto Central Library. Talbot maintains his studio in Warwick, NY

Rebecca C. Etcheverry's work is abstract with references to the real world. Her works range from acrylic on canvas, drawings on Mylar, to prints and watercolors.

About the Exhibit: Laura BenAmots' exhibit consists of 12 battle portraits, 18 preparatory works on paper, nine smaller paintings and 11 small rendered portraits. The battle portraits range from four feet by six feet to six feet by nine feet. The works on paper are mixed media, and all paintings are oil on canvas or linen.

About the Book: "Battle Portraits" is a 64-page full-color book that includes all of Laura BenAmots' preliminary drawings and paintings, the 12 mural-sized paintings, an artist Q&A by Jessica Hunter Larsen of the Colorado College IDEA Space, and essays by Colorado College anthropology professor Sarah Hautzinger, and art historian and Pikes Peak Community College art history lecturer Nancy Fraser Coco.

"Battle Portraits" costs $24.95 (plus tax), advance copies are available for $21.95 through the Business of Art Center (email LuDel Walter or call 719-685-1861 for details).

10 percent of the proceeds from book sales will go to art therapy for returning military and veterans in treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and/or traumatic brain injuries.

Call for Student Artists :: Wunderkind 2012

The Business of Art Center is seeking high school student artists to
participate in WUNDERKIND 2012-an acclaimed juried exhibition and educational program showcasing extraordinary work by 12-15 artists from the Pikes Peak region.
 
Completed applications are due at the Business of Art Center on or before: Saturday February 18th, 2012-Please drop of during business hours Tuesday-Saturday 11am-6pm. Notification of acceptance Feb. 25th.
 
A complete Wunderkind 2012 application will include:
Completed Application Form, A portfolio of work by the artist:
on CD/DVD, or as print outs - (no original work), An artist's statement, A letter of recommendation from a teacher or sponsor, and a letter of permission from parent or guardian.

The Big Chair Project Art Show - What's in a Chair?

In October, 2011, Manitou Springs was the site of the largest artwork ever created in the Pikes Peak Region using only chairs borrowed from the community.  The artwork is now a celebrated part of Manitou's history.  Join the BAC in a commemorative art exhibit on the them of the chair.

The BAC is accepting Chair Project inspired art and art on a chair theme to fill the BAC galleries from March 2-31, 2012.

Accepting art in all categories and levels for a flat $5 entry fee per piece*.  Open to anyone.

Make a chair, paint a chair, draw a chair, sculpt a chair, photograph a chair, write about a chair, act with a chair, play music in a chair, dance with a chair, sing about a chair, video a chair, or just be creative with the idea of a chair!

Awards and prizes for Best 2D and 3DMost OriginalBest CraftsmanshipMost ExpressiveBest in Show and more will be announced at the free public opening reception on March 2.

The exhibit will also feature the official photos of the installation by project photographers Billie Allor, Phil Barnett, Mary Berger, Brenda Biondo, Lilian Critchlow, Carol Dass, Jack Elder, Bradley Flora, Cas Foste, Charles Knoeckel, Heather Oelklaus and Bill Young, artwork created by students from Manitou Springs and the surrounding area, and much more.

 *All artwork must be ready to display and the BAC reserves the right to exclude art it deems unsuitable.

Deadline for Submissions is February 24, 2012
