Kevin Thayer, Video Still from Untitled (solarizations), 2008

INVIDNATION
an invitational exhibition of
contemporary video art
Hagnauer Gallery
April 18 – June 7, 2008

“It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” This is the opening line to George Orwell’s book, 1984 – how ironic that this story predicted the Big Brother Theory in which we transform from a society where the police used to watch over the people to a time where the police are watching the people. The irony is that we now live with the Patriot Act, and we the people have also turned the surveillance on ourselves. Whether it is the horror of reality T.V. or the many bent stories on You Tube, the camera and the screen are national obsessions. Yet, the camera and the screen are also artful tools, allowing us to create a stage of moving images, layers of sound, and compositions that prod us to engage with the medium in ways other than voyeuristically. Join us for this provocative exhibition of contemporary video work by local and international artists.
Participating Artists: Atomic Elroy, Valerie Brodar, Don Goede, Micheal Kimbrell, Timber, Luisa Greenfield, Matt Barton, Kevin Thayer, and Holly Parker. Curator: Holly Parker

CANYON WALLS
interpretations of the southwestern landscape,
by award winning artist Eulalie J. Brown
Spencer Hall Gallery April 9 – June 3, 2008

Color, shape, and texture dominate Eulalie’s water media interpretations of the Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona landscape. She wants the Canyon Wall series to evoke an emotion, an idea, a sense of place; one that expresses the vast distance, heights and depths of the rock walls and the atmospheric effects of the light across these vistas.
Eulalie Brown studied graphic design at Parsons School of Design in N.Y. She earned her BA in Art Education from C W Post College in Brookville N.Y. She has a Masters in Special Education from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. She currently lives in Colorado Springs where she works as a painter, digital artist, website designer, and teacher. She is a member of the Bridge Gallery and the Colorado Springs Art Guild.-

THE RAVEN – The Poem and an Artist’s Paintings
paintings based on Edgar Allan Poe’s poem
by Sandy Applegate
Avenue Gallery
April 9 to June 3, 2008

Sandy has placed raven images in atmospheres suggested by phrases from Poe’s poem. These are not illustrations, but paintings that evoke the many word-pictures from this great poem. There are brief moments of levity within the poem, and her corresponding images reflect this lighter mood. Other images reflect the darker, more tragic elements of “The Raven”. Sandy received her BA in Fine Arts at the University of Illinois, Chicago, but currently lives in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. She is represented by Work on Paper Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Wild Spirit Gallery in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
